Before we dive into herbal and natural treatments for hemorrhoids, let’s consider why these methods have becoming more and more popular. Without getting on my soap box, consider the alternatives. Creams, salves, suppositories, pills, etc… they all are temporary. They do not focus on the root cause of the problems. (see list of causes here) After all, how much money would the large pharmaceutical companies stand to loose if they actually CURED people?
That was a rhetorical question because the answer is so obvious. They need you coming back for more and more in order to stay in business and each one has it’s own list of side effects. Not to mention the cost of this vicious never ending cycle. Then to top it off, you will hear negative propaganda from both the governments and drug companies because these natural treatments can not be regulated. Congress men and women get more kick backs by keeping the public blind to all that nature has to offer. Now with all the recalls and illnesses contributed to conventional ‘drugs’ – people are getting wiser. So whether it be eczema, acne, yeast infections, bad breath, or hemorrhoids, natural treatments are catching on like wild fire.
Butchers Broom:
The active compound in Butchers Broom is Ruscogen which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
Also known as Sweet Broom or Box Holly, it is usually ingested as a tea or in caplet form and can be found by any of those names in a local natural health food store. Steep about a teaspoon in a cup of hot water. It tends to be somewhat bitter, so adding a little honey to it will make it more palatable.
Horse Chestnut:
Works much the same way as Butchers Broom but with a disclaimer! It to can be ingested as a tea or in capsule form. Its anti-inflammatory properties have been known to reduce swelling and irritation, while promoting the structural repair of the veins. Chances are that you won’t go out and harvest this herb on your own, but if you were to do that, you must be careful to harvest the correct part of the plant. ONLY ingest parts of the plant that are connected to its young branches. Never prepare parts of the older, more mature parts of the branches, including the bark and the seeds. People who take blood thinners or have blood disorders should avoid Horse Chestnut because as rare as it is, there are still those that have experience side effects.
Good ole’ Bioflavonoids:
What are Bioflavonoids you ask? For one, they have earned a great amount of respect among the natural health community in recent years. For the most part, Bioflavonoids are to the natural pigments in vegetables and fruits. Researchers have identified hundreds of different bioflavonoids with a majority of these stemming from citrus fruits. The mere fact that we are talking about natural fruits and vegetables echoes good health. Scientists will argue though that there is not yet enough research to label bioflavonoids as essential to a healthy human diet. BUT COME ON!!!
You and your mama all ready knew that eating fresh fruits and vegetables were good for you, but now science is catching up and starting to find several healing benefits, including promoting blood clotting, preventing the damage of free radicals, as well as several potential cancer-fighting properties. What does this have to do with hemorrhoid natural treatment? Some studies have shown that bioflavonoids possess the ability to maintain and heal capillaries. Capillaries are the tiny blood vessels that transfer nutrients, hormones, antibodies and oxygen from the bloodstream to your organs. Hemorrhoids are just inflamed capillaries. Logically, it stands to reason that as you digest enough bioflavonoids can are helping your body counteract the inflammation that causes hemorrhoids.
Some foods that are high in bioflavonoids include citrus fruits such as lemons, grapefruits and oranges. Other fruits high in bioflavonoid content include grapes, cherries, cantaloupes, apricots, blackberries, and black currants. Grape seed extract is known to be very high in antioxidants, but it also contains anthocyanins and proanthocyanins which help with the integrity of your veins (i.e. hemorrhoids)
Then make sure that you get plenty of green leafy vegetables like broccoli.

Now back to bowels.. fact is that you will find Psyllium Husk in many over the counter laxatives. As a result it forms a gelatin-like mass in the colon, which helps absorbs toxins and keeps the bowels nice and soft.
There are several things you should know and dig a little deeper into before using Psyllium though. It should always be diluted with just about anything.. fruit juice, soups, ice cream shakes, water, milk, etc. Remember that it absorbs many times it’s own weight, so drink plenty of water before and after your ‘fiber cocktail’ or you run the risk of becoming dehydrated.
